I graduated from the University of East Anglia with a BA in French, German and Linguistics in 1987, then went to the University of Essex where I wrote a PhD on dialect contact in the Fens. In 1991, I began a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Linguistics (now School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies) of Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, working on the first large-scale study of language variation and change in New Zealand English. I returned to Essex in 1993 as a lecturer in the Department of Language and Linguistics, and became a senior lecturer in 2002. My research and teaching interests are in language variation and change in East Anglian and Southern Hemisphere varieties of English, dialect contact and new dialect formation, and the interrelationship of dialectology and human geography.
