Welcome...The Liberal Democrats exist at Essex University to bring like-minded people together and campaign for a better world. The party nationally is now looking for a new leader after the resignation of Sir Ming Campbell following pressure from the media. We are expecting a boost from the new leader, especially as there are lots of exciting announcements to come!
We hope you find what you came here to our website
to look for,
but if not please email us at
libdem@essex.ac.uk Rather than being political geeks who sit around talking about voting behaviour and systems all day long, we like to meet up to have a chat (or a rant), or beat some Tories at football - and hopefully one day laser quest when they get together enough people to form a team! We try to have a politics & pizza night at least every fortnight, and hopefully most weeks; which will usually be a heated debate (over who drunk the beers!), or a Q & A session with an MP or other notable guest speakers, and occasionally we head off out armed with piles of leaflets to deliver on behalf of the local party...
...and they tend to buy us dinner afterwards - usually because we win the election!
Other than that we try to write focuses at least twice a term, which we deliver out to students to let them know what we're up to, run various campaigns, such as last year's Christmas shoebox appeal, our current campaigns on campus recycling facilities, action in Darfur, human and civil rights issues, scrapping tuition fees and many more!
All our campaigns are rooted in a Liberal philosophy, which while we are pretty much all social liberals, we are a mix of economic liberals and economically social-leaning types, which makes for great debates! Don't worry if you don't think you know enough, we are happy to explain anything you might wish to know about politics. The more active members among us meet each other at federal conferences, regional conferences, and even youth & students conferences. Everything is available for all members, and is entirely voluntary.
So whether you're looking to get involved with the party, enjoy getting angry about what's wrong with the world, or simply enjoy our popular 60's nights...
...there's a place for you within our society, so please join us online today by clicking here or ask about us at the SU reception, because together we can win a better world. Habib. |
