Welcome...
Essex Liberal Youth exists
to be a forum to bring like-minded people together and campaign for a better
world. We are a group of Essex students who support and are interested in the
Liberal Democrat Party. The Liberal Democrats are a party that stand for a fair,
free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of
liberty, equality and community, and in which no-one shall be enslaved by
poverty, ignorance or conformity.
We hope you find what you came here to our website
to look for, but if not please email our society president at
bderic@essex.ac.uk .
As a society we look to
bring together various groups of political thought. The Liberal Democrats have a
long tradition of internal discussion on a variety of issues ranging from policy
to leadership, and at the University of Essex we are no different. All opinions
are welcome at the table, from borderline socialism to market liberalism (just
ask our very varied members!)
We are an active political
society with regular meetings to discuss topical issues as well as social events
staged throughout the year. The regular meetings are a great opportunity to
share and develop your own views whilst feeding into an ever-evolving party. The
social events, whilst being fun, also provide a place to meet a wider range of
students.
The formation of the
government coalition between the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives has
been the cause of much heated debate. We provide a place for discussion upon
this important topic where everyone's view upon this issue is welcomed. Notably,
we will always be honest about our failings, particularly as being in government
has not been easy. Policies such as tuition fees, NHS reform, voting reform and
of course the cuts have all led to questions about our party.
We do however believe that
the coalition is not all doom and gloom as whilst in government we have
fulfilled 75% of our manifesto pledges (BBC statistic). We have also acted as a
moderating influence in the coalition, particularly in regards to the NHS
reforms. For all the complaints made against the party, they, and we, are
listening and making changes where needed. Ask yourself: Would other parties do
this if they were in a one party majority?
We are determined to continue pushing this message on campus as we share the belief that the Liberal Democrats will build a fairer Britain. We are a vital alternative to the views of Labour and the Conservatives.
Many Essex students have gone on to greater things within the party including local Councillors Mark Cory, Jon Manning and Gary Scott as well as former Westminster and European Parliamentary candidate Jonathan Bramall.
Why not visit our stall during Freshers Fair or attend one of our (many) events throughout the year? Your views and opinions are welcomed - we look forward to seeing and hearing from you!
