Hello and welcome to the University of Essex Nightline. We hope you find the information you need, however if you cannot, feel free to contact us and we'll be happy to help.
Nightline is run by students, for students. It is open every night during term-time from 10pm to 8am and can be found on the ground floor of Keynes tower. The entrance to Nightline is at the back of the tower. We are non-political, non-denominational and non-sectarian organisation, with members from all areas of the University community.
Born in May, 1970 Nightline was started by
an ex-director of the Colchester branch of the Samaritans
and a member of the university chaplaincy.
It was set up to provide a crisis listening service for
students in their time of need and aid student well-being.
Nightline started in a student's bedroom of one of the tower
residences. We started off with just a simple telephone
service. This has developed over time to the Essex Nightline
we know today which consists of an office, two drop-in
lounges, three bedrooms and a kitchen.
Today Nightline are present in many of the universities
throughout the United Kingdom, and has travelled world-wide
to the United States and Canada.
However different the universities, the same fundamental
guiding principle remains, to offer students a confidential
listening and information service that is non-directive,
non-judgemental, anonymous and seeks to empathise, not
sympathise, with those that use the service.
