Well
it all started with a serious affliction, a passion for audio ! I joined the department initially as a technician in the mechanical workshop where I remained until my affliction led me into the world of electronics and I moved into our repair and calibration section, soon after this however I joined my first research group, working on a digital telephone exchange feasibility project. On completion of this the next project was concerned with video and picture coding techniques, this lasted for two years after which I joined another group that was initially concerned with instrumentation. This group eventually became involved with active noise and vibration cancellation and I was once again able to indulge my passion with a vengeance and I remained with the group until, a victim of it’s success the group broke up.
Now cured of my affliction came a transformation and I discovered the world of
R.F. and began work on restoring a 34GHz radar system, the idea was to look at
scattering in rain clouds. This complete I moved into a teaching lab concerned
with telecommunication systems but soon became involved with microwaves again,
this time in the shape of microstrip antenna measurements. This led to my
current involvement with the group when as a result of a fortunate coincidence I
was introduced to the work of Sandra Dudley and self pulsing lasers, all the
elements then came together, lets hope the cure is a permanent one. Outside University, I like canoeing and if you want to email me on anything above, then it's quinlan@essex.ac.uk
I recently had a paper accepted to Loughbourough Antenna and Propegation Conference (LAPC) in April!!
