Course Description
This course is concerned with the way that words and sentences come to mean what they mean. The first term introduces the notion of 'meaning', in various aspects (how words mean, how sentences mean, how speakers mean). This half of the module follows the course book (HHS).
The second term introduces various aspects of word structure and various notions of ‘dictionary’ and lexical relatedness. In this part, students will be familiarized with the basic patterns of English morphology and how they relate to word meaning, the different types of meanings that individual words can express, and the meaning relationships between words, building on the material of the first term.
Much emphasis will be placed on the practical skills of morphological and semantic analysis and some part of most classes will be devoted to data analysis.
