Announcing a New Project:


DATABASE ON
MINORITY LANGUAGES
OF RUSSIA

In cooperation with the Institute of Linguistics (Institut jazykoznanija) of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow, the ICHEL has launched a three-year (1998-2000) joint project for the creation of a database on Russia's minority languages for the Internet. The information to be stored in the English-language database is mainly sociolinguistic. The project is headed by Professor Vida Mikhalchenko with the assistance of Researcher Olga Kazakevitch on the Russian side and Professor Kazuto Matsumura on the ICHEL side.

The database, which is to be placed on the ICHEL's WWW server, will cover the following 54 languages with speakers not more than 50,000:
